Student Employee Eligibility Requirements

First-time students who have been admitted to the CSUDH may NOT work as a student assistant/Federal work study student assistant prior to their actual enrollment.

To be eligible to work and maintain employment, a student assistant must be enrolled in:

  • 6.0 undergraduate units
  • 4.0 graduate units
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or greater

Upon withdrawal from all classes or drop in enrollment below 6.0, students may not remain in a student assistant position.

International Student
To be eligible to work and maintain employment, a Non鈥揅itizen student assistant must be registered as a full-time student

  • 12.0 Undergraduate units
  • 8.0 Graduate units
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or greater
Summer classification

Students are eligible for summer employment if the student was enrolled at least half-time the previous academic term and registered for the following academic term.

Student Terminations / Resignations
  • Terminations must be processed by Student Employment Transaction Form (SEPTF), Action/Reason: Termination, End Temporary Employment.
  • Termination SEPTF and final timesheet must be uploaded to as soon as possible.
  • Under CA Law, employees who are discharged or have submitted a resignation notice with at least 72 hours鈥 notice must be paid all wages due at the time of separation. Employees who quit without giving minimal notice must be paid within 72 hours.
Graduating Seniors

Upon graduation, Student Assistants may work up to the last official day of the academic term. In addition, campuses may allow graduating Student Assistants to work one term immediately following graduation, up until the day before the next term starts, as a Bridge Student Assistant.听

For example, at semester system campuses, Student Assistants graduating in the spring term may work through the summer period up until the day before the fall term begins.

Student Assistants in a Nonresident Aliens tax status should refer to Department of Homeland Security duration of status requirements.

Federal Work Study (FWS)

FWS provides part-time employment to undergraduate and graduate students, and funds to employ students (on-campus or off-campus) who qualify for federal financial aid.

Human Resources Management

Human Resources

Departments must work with HR on the hiring procedures and when applicable, students must complete onboarding. After the process is complete, HR will notify the department and student granting approval to begin work.

Payroll听

Students must work with their manager and department timekeeper to ensure hours worked is submitted and approved timely so Payroll can process and issue pay. Refer to the Payroll Calendar for Student Paydays and contact the department check handler for check pick-up. Enrollment in Direct Deposit is strongly encouraged.
