Practicum Education plays a vital role in the preparation of competent future social work professional practitioners.
The philosophy of the ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Practicum Education Program is that internship practice supplements and reinforces classroom instruction through the utilization of agency placement sites.
Practicum Education offers students an opportunity to come in contact with a variety of populations that have various types of needs and problems reflective of the population the student would encounter in future practice. In practicum, the student is able to go where the client population is located, provide a service, and assist in meeting the individual, families, groups, organizations, communities, and societal needs. In addition to the skills and theoretical knowledge needed for direct service with various client systems, students also gain a hands-on understanding of the social work profession’s value base, its expectations in terms of practice and codes of conduct, communication, and protocols.Ìý
The schedule for the academic year model of practicum parallels the University academic year, with practicum placement beginning in late August and continuing through early May (start and end dates may vary slightly depending on University academic calendar).

The MSW program is a rigorous course of study comprised of 60 semester units of course work. Twelve (12) of these units are devoted to practicum education. Students take concurrent course work and weekly practicum seminar.
Students complete a minimum 16-20 hours each week during their generalist and specialized practice years of practicum for a total of 1028 hours of practicum clock hours by the end of their two-year or three-year MSW program.

At this time, practicum education placements must be completed Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.Ìý

Each student will be assigned to two practicum placements (in two different agencies) during the course of study:
During the Generalist practice year practicum placements are identified and assigned by the Practice Education team. The majority of generalist practice year placements focus on direct service with individuals, groups and communities. Generalist Year MSW students are required to be available to attend practicum at least two (2) 8-hour days per work week, usually on Monday and Wednesday.
During the Specialized practice year practicum placements align with students’ areas of specialization: Community Capacity Building, Community Mental Health, or Children, Youth, and Families. Specialized Year MSW students are required to be available to attend practicum at least two (2) 8-hour days per work week and one (1) additional 4-hour day per work week, usually on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Please note: If a student is enrolled in the three-year part-time program, practicum occurs in the second and third year of the program. For part-time option MSW students, required on-site practicum hours may vary based on both the MSW student and the practicum site's discretion.
For MSW students interested in pursuing school social work, you have the option toÌýcomplete the required, additional internship hours to qualify for the certification course while at CSUDH. Once admitted into the MSW program, students must disclose their interest in obtaining a PPSC to the Practicum Education team. For those interested in the PPSC, please take note of the additional hours required when deciding to apply.Ìý

Please note: MSW students who are currently receiving a stipend and/or are enrolled in a grant-based training program may only be eligible to be placed in a program-specific practicum site. If you are receiving a stipend and/or are enrolled in a grant-based training program, please reach out to your program's stipend coordinator or project coordinator to discuss practicum site eligibility.Ìý
