Prospective Students

We are social workers dedicated to pursuing a more just, global society by advancing anti-racist social work education, research, and community-centered practice.

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program program at CSUDH prides itself on being the first and only known MSW program in the country that undergirds its curriculum with an explicit focus on Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality.

Accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), the program requires sixty (60) units of coursework in addition to 1,028 hours of field practicum. Our graduates meet educational requirements to register as an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW) toward a License of Clinical Social Work (LCSW) through the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Program Specializations

Our MSW Program currently offers three specializations: 1) Community Mental Health (CMH), 2)听 Children, Youth, and Families (CYF), and 3) Community Capacity Building (CCB). To learn more about each specialization, click here.听

Please note: Once admitted, full-time option students may change the focus of their specialization in the Spring semester of their generalist practice year, prior to their specialization year.

For part-time students: Part-time option students are only eligible for the Community Mental Health (CMH) specialization at this time.

Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC)

For MSW students interested in pursuing school social work, you have the option to听complete the required, additional internship hours to qualify for the certification course while at CSUDH. Once admitted into the MSW program, students must disclose their interest in obtaining a PPSC to the Practicum Education team. For those interested in the PPSC, please take note of the additional hours required when deciding to apply.听

Priority Status*

Submit by December 1, 2026

Applications for the upcoming Fall term will be accepted starting October 1, and are due by February 1 of the starting term year. Starting Fall 2024, applications received by December 1 will receive Priority Status*. Applications are reviewed using a rolling admissions process, and will be reviewed on a first come first serve basis until spaces are filled. Incomplete or late application materials may not be forwarded for review.

Please note: Prospective students may only apply for one program option per academic year.

Admission to the Master of Social Work program is limited to the fall semester of each academic year only; we do not offer spring or summer enrollment.

*Priority Status

Priority Status eligibility requires MSW applicants to submit and complete all required elements of the Cal State Apply application and CSU Dominguez Hills MSW Program application, including: 1) receipt of a minimum three (3) Letters of Recommendation and 2) receipt of all Official Transcripts by the University prior to December 1st.

Please note: Applicants who are currently completing coursework during the Fall term will not be eligible to apply under Priority Status since Fall grades will not have been posted in the official transcripts by their institution by the December 1st priority status deadline.

Admissions Decisions

Due to the volume of applications received each application cycle, faculty review committee decisions are released on a rolling basis between late-January and early-April.

Admissions Appeals

Due to the number of applications received each year admissions appeals are not considered.

For Admitted MSW Students ONLY

Intent to Enroll Guidelines

Admitted students have 14 days from the date of their admittance letter (not the date the applicant receives or reviews their admittance letter) to respond to the University regarding their admittance into the CSUDH MSW program, i.e.: either to accept or decline.

If the admitted student chooses to accept their admittance into the MSW program, the incoming student will be required to submit a $100 non-refundable enrollment fee prior to confirming their acceptance.

Nonrefundable Enrollment Fee (New for Fall 2025)

As of Fall 2025, CSUDH Graduate Studies implemented a $100 nonrefundable enrollment fee due at the time an admitted student decides to accept their admittance and enroll in the CSUDH MSW program.

The goal of the $100 nonrefundable enrollment fee is to ensure an admitted student secures their position in the upcoming cohort. Once enrolled in coursework in the Fall, the $100 non-refundable enrollment fee will be applied to the student's tuition.

Please note: If an enrolled student decides to withdraw their enrollment into the CSUDH MSW program, the withdrawn student will forfeit the $100 nonrefundable enrollment fee to the University. For questions, please reach out to Graduate Studies at gstudies@csudh.edu.

Request for Deferment

Due to the unique make up and number of incoming students our MSW Program accepts each year each year, requests for deferment are not considered. Applicants who have been accepted into the MSW Program and can no longer attend the incoming Fall cohort are encouraged to reapply.

Admissions Requirements

The CSUDH MSW Program Admissions Committee welcomes applicants that can demonstrate both academic and professional maturity, high academic achievement, and potential for professional social work practice.

A bachelor鈥檚 degree from a regionally accredited institution is required to apply. Typically, our applicants hold bachelor degrees in psychology, sociology, child development, human services, criminal justice, and social work, however, applicants with non-typical undergraduate degrees, e.g., business administration, economics, and the arts, are encouraged to apply.

Please note: Applicants who are in the last phase of degree completion are eligible to apply, but are ineligible for Priority Status.

Application Fee

Applicants must pay a $70 application fee to submit an application via Cal State Apply.

Please note: Application fee waivers and appeals are provided only to undergraduate, first-time freshman and transfer applicants who qualify and consider California their permanent home. Graduate-level applicants are not considered for fee waivers at this time.
