SPE MA Application Procedures

Application Deadlines

Please Note: Official transcripts must be sent to the Admissions Office prior to the deadline.


Helpful tips to ensure your transcripts are received:

  • Submit your Cal State Apply application prior to sending official transcripts from your former institutions.
  • Use the same name on your Cal State Apply application as on your transcripts (if your name has changed, indicate this in your transcript order).

Application Procedures

Important Note: If your primary goal is to earn a Preliminary Credential in Special Education, we strongly recommend that you first apply to the credential program.听 Please refer to the Early Childhood Special Education Credential Application Procedures or the Mild Moderate Support Needs/Extensive Support Needs Credential Application Procedures for instructions on how to apply.听 You may choose to pursue the Master of Arts in Special Education after completing your credential. We look forward to supporting you in whichever program best aligns with your goals.

Official Transcripts

After you have completed the application in Cal State Apply, but before the application deadline, submit one official electronic set of transcripts for all undergraduate and any post-graduate work. Official transcripts for coursework or degrees completed at CSUDH do not need to be submitted.

Electronic official transcripts from domestic institutions are encouraged and preferred to be sent to admissions@csudh.edu. Transcripts are considered official only when sent directly from the issuing institution to the CSUDH Office of Admissions. Transfer credit posted on official transcripts from another institution do not substitute the submission of individual official transcripts.

Applicants are expected to have a minimum of 3.00 grade point average (GPA) in the last 60 semester units of upper division and post baccalaureate work OR a combined score of 1000 or better on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If you do NOT meet this requirement, submit a .

Two (2) Letters of Recommendation

You will be asked to include the names and emails of two (2) professionals who can provide a realistic appraisal of your qualifications for graduate-level coursework. Your referrers will be contacted directly by the University to request letters of recommendation on your behalf. You will not be able to view these recommendations.

CV/Resume

Upload a current curriculum vitae (resume).

Teaching Credential

Valid initial and/or advanced Special Education credential (e.g., California Level I/II, Preliminary/Clear, or Life Special Education Teaching Credential; hold closely aligned certification or demonstration of content knowledge in the field; out of state or international candidates must have equivalent credentials, or demonstration of deep current knowledge). Must upload copy of valid CA teaching credential or resume verifying equivalent knowledge base.
