Medical Care

Experiences such as unwanted sexual contact, relationship harm, or stalking can affect health in many ways. Some people seek medical care right away, while others take time. Any choice is okay.

Not sure what kind of medical care is needed?

A confidential counselor can help talk through options at any stage.

When medical care may be helpful

Medical care can address many health concerns after interpersonal harm. Some reasons people seek care include:

  • Checking for injuries
  • Addressing pain or discomfort
  • Testing or treatment for STIs
  • Discussing pregnancy prevention options
  • Follow-up care or referrals

People often visit more than one provider over time. Any pace is okay.

Types of medical care

Medical care can include:

  • Emergency care for serious or urgent injuries
  • Clinic or primary care visits for non-emergency concerns
  • Reproductive and sexual health services
  • Follow-up medical visits

These options may be used before or after a forensic exam, or without one. Individuals choose the timing and type of care that feels appropriate for them.
