Labor Studies examines all aspects of working life, with a focus on collective action for positive social change. Our courses emphasize workers' rights, political economy, workplace issues, labor law, inequality, racial and social justice, the environment, organizing, and economic democracy. We discuss historical and current efforts to improve working conditions in LA County and globally, especially for workers of color and immigrants.听
Our graduates become leaders and catalysts for social change and improve the lives of working people. They work in unions, government agencies, community organizations, human resources departments, and non-profits. Alumni make their mark as organizers, union officers, lawyers, researchers, investigators, and communications specialists, and many go on to graduate study.
Our program was founded in 1977. We are one of only two degree programs in Labor Studies at four-year universities in Southern California. Our faculty include scholar-activists with combined decades of experience as practitioners. Our Department offers a major, a minor, and a certificate program. Many of our classes--and all required for our BA--are held during nights, weekends, or online so working students can complete their degrees smoothly.
Designed with the assistance of state and local labor leaders, Labor Studies at CSUDH coordinates with programs at community colleges, such as , , , and the , as well as with the .听
We welcome students currently enrolled at area community colleges or at other CSU or UC campuses to cross-enroll in one of our courses for a fee of only $10.
