Create Accessible Digital Content

Learn how to create accessible documents, media, and web content that meet accessibility standards.

Accessibility: Alt Text
Alternative text (alt text) provides a written description of images so users who rely on screen readers or who cannot see images can understand the content. Proper use of alt text ensures that visual information is communicated clearly and equitably to all users.
Accessibility: Color Contrast

Color contrast ensures that text and visual elements are easy to see and read. Sufficient contrast supports users with low vision, color blindness, and anyone viewing content in varied lighting or on different devices.

Accessibility: Headings & Structure

Headings provide structure to content and help users understand how information is organized. Properly formatted headings allow screen reader users to navigate documents and web pages efficiently.

Accessibility: Links & Lists
Accessible links help users understand where a link will take them before they select it. And lists help organize content and make information easier to read and understand.
Accessibility: Tables
Tables should be used to present data clearly and in a structured way. Accessible tables help users understand relationships between data when using screen readers or other assistive technologies.
Accessibility: Video & Audio
Accessible video and audio content ensures that users who cannot hear or see media can still access the information. Captions, transcripts, and accessible players are essential.
Accessibility: Images, Graphs & Charts
Images, charts, and graphs must be accessible so that users who cannot see them can still understand the information they convey. Accessibility focuses on communicating meaning, context, and key takeaways, not just visual appearance.
Accessibility: Social Media Content
Accessible social media content ensures that posts are understandable to all users, including those using assistive technologies. Most platforms offer built-in accessibility features.
Accessibility: PDFs

Accessible PDFs allow users with disabilities to read and navigate documents using assistive technologies. PDFs should be properly structured, tagged, and created from accessible source files.

Important Note: Create accessible source documents before converting to PDF.

In furtherance of ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú, Dominguez Hills’ overall mission of accessibility and commitment to excellence through diversity, equity, and inclusion, DH strives to ensure that its information and communication technology is accessible to everyone.

Laws, Policy, and Executive Orders

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (504) require that qualified individuals be provided equal access to programs, services, and activities. California Government Code 11135 applies Section 508 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, as amended in 1998, to state entities and to the ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú (CSU) system. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, create new opportunities for people with disabilities, and encourage the development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú system statement on accessibility is articulated in Executive Order 1111.
