CSUDH’s instructor-led Medical Insurance Billing program, conducted live online, provides an in-depth understanding of the key concepts and processes involved in the medical insurance billing industry.
Participants will gain foundational knowledge in medical terminology and learn about coding systems such as Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). The program also introduces the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)—Medicare’s standardized coding system developed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)—used for services and supplies not covered by CPT codes, including ambulance services, medical equipment, and certain drugs. The program further explores medical record composition, including what constitutes a complete medical record, how records are analyzed, and the documentation requirements for different types of services.
In addition, learners will review the major payer groups (Blue Cross, Commercial/Managed Care, Medicare, Medicaid/Medi-Cal, Workers' Comp, TRICARE, CHAMPUS, and VA) and explore how medical bills are created across various healthcare settings—such as physician offices, hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities. The course also examines the computer systems and software that support the billing process.
Students will also address important legal and privacy regulations, including compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other confidentiality standards that govern patient information.
Medical insurance billing is a stable and lucrative field within the medical industry. The business office of every healthcare provider must provide proper documentation to a number of insurance companies for reimbursement for services. Opportunities for employment of insurance billers include physicians' offices, clinics, hospitals, and medical supply companies. The demand is driven by the growing need for healthcare services of an aging population as well as the need for individuals able to handle the complexities of paper and electronic information.
