40-Hour Training Commitment

The training includes:

• 18 hours of live virtual instruction via Zoom
• 12 hours of required in-person training
• 10 hours of required self-study through Canvas

The Canvas self-study includes approximately 4 hours of required pre-work that must be completed before the first live training session. Additional Canvas modules will be completed throughout the six-week training and may include videos, readings, resources, and knowledge checks.

Fall 2026 Schedule

Each in-person Friday includes 6 hours of training plus 2 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break. Lunch will be provided. The November 20 session is the final training session.

Participation and Attendance Expectations

Please review the full schedule before applying. Applicants should only apply if they can attend both required in-person sessions and reasonably expect to participate in the full training schedule.

Participants are expected to:

• Attend and participate in all scheduled live virtual sessions
• Attend both required in-person Friday sessions in full
• Complete all required Canvas pre-work and self-study
• Complete the full 40 hours of training
• Participate actively in skills practice and group activities
• Engage respectfully and maintain the confidentiality of training discussions

Attendance and Make-Up Policy

A limited amount of missed virtual instruction may be completed through CAPE-approved make-up work.

• Participants may make up a maximum of two virtual sessions, or 3 hours total.
• Missing more than 15 minutes of a 90-minute virtual session, whether due to late arrival, early departure, or another absence, requires completion of the make-up assignment for the entire session.
• Both in-person Friday sessions are required. They cannot be attended remotely or replaced with asynchronous make-up work.
• All Canvas self-study requirements must be completed.
• All required training hours must be completed before a Certificate of Completion is issued.

Please note: If you already know that you cannot attend one of the required in-person training days, please consider applying for a future cohort.

Fall 2026 admission is application-based and is not first-come, first-served. Because the cohort is limited to 20 participants, applications will be reviewed based on availability, readiness to complete the full training, and anticipated ability to use the training to benefit the CSUDH community.

1. Submit an Application

Applicants will complete a brief application about their interest in the training, availability to attend the full schedule, and how they anticipate using what they learn to support the CSUDH community.

2. Application Review

Applications will be reviewed September 22–25, 2026.

Applications will be considered based on:

• Ability to participate in the full training schedule
• Readiness to complete the 40-hour training commitment
• Interest in domestic violence advocacy and survivor support
• Anticipated ability to apply the training in ways that benefit the CSUDH community and strengthen campus response

3. Brief Virtual Interview

Selected applicants will be invited to a brief virtual interview during the week of September 28, 2026 to discuss their interest, availability, and readiness to participate in the full training.

4. Final Selection

Accepted participants will receive confirmation and next steps, including Canvas enrollment information, required pre-work instructions, and additional training details.

Because space is limited, submitting an application or participating in an interview does not guarantee acceptance into the cohort.

Important Information

• Participants must complete all required training hours to receive a Certificate of Completion.
• Completion of this training satisfies the 40-hour training component for Domestic Violence Counselor training in California. Additional requirements apply to individuals serving as Domestic Violence Counselors, including working or volunteering with a qualifying domestic violence program under appropriate supervision.
• Completion of the training does not guarantee employment, internship, volunteer placement, or a position with CAPE.

In Fall 2025, CAPE completed its first cohort of the 40-Hour Domestic Violence Counselor Training and conducted a post-training assessment to better understand participant learning, experience, and areas for growth.

This assessment is part of CAPE’s commitment to building equitable, accessible, and sustainable training programs that are responsive to participant feedback and the realities of campus-based advocacy work.

The findings from this assessment are guiding thoughtful revisions to the training curriculum, structure, and pacing. Based on this feedback, CAPE is currently refining the training to strengthen learning outcomes and better support future participants.
