Donis Leonard is a Professor of Theatre and Speech Communication at CSUDH and is also a proud union member of Screen Actors Guild and Actor鈥檚 Equity Association. Professor Leonard teaches various courses in speech communication, and his specialty is acting performance. Some of Professor Leonard鈥檚 directing highlights include: 鈥淭he Piano Lesson,鈥 鈥淏lues for an Alabama Sky鈥, 鈥淢iss Evers鈥 Boys,鈥 鈥淔lyin鈥 West,鈥 鈥淭he African Company Presents Richard III,鈥 鈥淶oo Man and The Sign,鈥 鈥淔or Colored Girls鈥︹ 鈥淭he Shadow Box, 鈥淎 Raisin in the Sun,鈥 鈥淛itney鈥 and 鈥淭he Heiress.鈥 Many of Professor Leonard productions have been nominated for NAACP theatre awards, and his production of Jitney won an NAACP theatre award for best supporting actress. Additionally, his production of 鈥淭he Heiress鈥 was honored with an Outstanding achievement award at the 2010 National Black Theatre Festival in the area of artistic direction.

Donis Leonard has also directed several performance Showcases in West Hollywood in which his former CSUDH students were able to showcase their talents to agents and casting directors and receive professional talent representation. Professor Leonard will be directing the upcoming CSUDH theatre production of 鈥淐eremonies in Dark Old Men,鈥 in February of 2026, and his grateful to be working with his gifted students and colleagues on such a beautiful and powerful story to celebrate Black history.
