Healthcare Safety Certificate Program Overview

The certificate of completion in Healthcare Safety is designed for the professional in the healthcare environment who is responsible for the safety of patients, employees, and visitors. A certificate of completion in Healthcare Safety will provide a solid foundation to assist in facilitating institutional compliance with OSHA regulations and meeting The Joint Commission (TJC) standards as they relate to the environment of care. Course content will specifically address conducting risk assessments, the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), NFPA鈥檚 Life Safety Code庐, and The Joint Commission鈥檚 Statement of Conditions鈩�.

The creation of this certificate responds to the needs of Safety Professionals for whom a certificate of completion contributes to career advancement and professional recognition. This program focuses on the responsibilities of a Safety Professional in the Healthcare Industry emphasizing both federal and state standards.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the Certificate program will be able to:

Perform research in electronic and print formats of OSHA Safety and Health standards, policies and procedures.
Utilize OSHA standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program
Identify common violations found in the healthcare environment and propose abatement actions which fulfill regulatory mandates
Demonstrate understanding of the different levels of standards (State/Federal) and how they apply to the healthcare industry
Identify standards in the NFPA鈥檚 Life Safety Code and how they apply to healthcare
Demonstrate understanding of specific OSHA standards and regulations which apply to the healthcare industry.
Apply The Joint Commission (TJC) standards as they relate to the healthcare industry.
Conduct a risk assessment.

Who Should Attend

Safety professionals, human resources, loss control representatives, workers compensation administrators, risk management personnel, top and middle management of healthcare facilities.

Healthcare Safety Certificate Requirements

To earn the Healthcare Safety Certificate, the individual will have to successfully complete seven required courses. At least five of the courses, including the final two, must be completed through the CSUDH OTI Education Center. All courses must be completed within a 5 year period. The official 鈥渃ertificate enrollment date鈥� is the first day of the first CSUDH OTI Education Center course the participant wishes to count towards the certificate of completion. Courses taken through other official OSHA Training Institute Education Centers can be used to fulfill up to two courses required for the certificate of completion in Healthcare Safety, if they were completed within two years prior to the participant鈥檚 official 鈥渃ertificate enrollment date鈥�.

To earn the Healthcare Safety Certificate, participants must complete total of seven required courses:

OSHA 7200 Bloodborne Pathogens
OSHA 7210 Pandemic Influenza & Airborne Transmissible Diseases
Hazardous Materials within the Healthcare Environment
Emergency Management within the Healthcare Environment
Fire & Safety within the Healthcare Environment
Basic Life Support 鈥� American Heart Association

Eligibility Requirements

This program is open to all participants interested in the field of Occupational Safety and Health.

HST Certificate Special Features

Courses are offered for continuing Education Units (CEUs). Nationally recognized standards govern attendance requirements to earn CEU credits. A permanent record is established, and students may request CSU Dominguez Hills鈥� transcript either online or by calling the University Records office. Students not pursuing the certificate of completion may take individual courses.

Program Prerequisites:: 鈥擜t least high school-level math, reading, language and writing skills

Total Program Fees: $2,645

(If attending on campus, parking fees are required. There are two options: $10/day for daily parking permits or $200 for semester permits.)

Location, Modality & Attendance: Class Requirements

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) at 好色先生, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) offers flexible learning options. Most courses are available in a听dual-modality format, allowing students to attend either on campus at CSUDH, or live online via Zoom.听

Courses listed as "Online and On-Campus" are interactive, instructor-led courses conducted simultaneously in a classroom and live online. Students choose their preferred modality at registration and attend either fully in person or fully online; a combination of both is not available.听

Per OSHA鈥檚 guidelines for VILT (Virtual Instructor-Led Training) courses:

Students are REQUIRED to have video capabilities and must be visible at all times to the instructor and facilitator during the class.
Unfortunately, if a student cannot comply with this requirement, they will not be able to attend the class.
Students are REQUIRED to attend all days and times听in order to receive a course completion certificate and/or trainer card.
Students must use a desktop or laptop to participate.
Tablets or phones are not allowed for the main class activities/lectures; however, you can use a phone for the 2nd camera for TESTING ONLY.
