The McNair Scholars Program is a multi-semester experience that combines faculty-mentored research, a structured summer project, workshops, and individual advising. The program helps first-generation college students who meet federal TRIO income criteria develop as researchers, build confidence, and prepare strong applications to graduate and doctoral programs.
McNair Scholars agree to:
- Sign a program and time-commitment agreement
- Attend required workshops, seminars, and meetings
- Meet regularly with McNair staff
- Enroll in and complete the UNV research and writing course for McNair Scholars in the spring when they join the program
- Complete a summer research or scholarly project with a faculty mentor
- Maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Actively prepare for graduate school by developing a list of target programs, drafting and revising statements of purpose and CVs, and applying to multiple graduate programs and funding opportunities
Each McNair Scholar works with a CSUDH faculty mentor who:
- Helps design and guide the research or scholarly project
- Provides feedback on methods, writing, and presentations
- Offers advice on graduate study, expectations, and academic pathways
- Offers guidance toward graduate programs and faculty in their field聽
During the summer (or another planned term), scholars complete a project that:
- Builds deeper knowledge in a field of interest
- Strengthens research, writing, and presentation skills
- Leads to a paper, poster, or academic conference presentation
Many scholars also participate in external summer research programs or internships coordinated with McNair staff.
McNair supports graduate preparation through:
- Workshops on finding programs, contacting faculty, and understanding funding
- Guidance on statements of purpose, personal statements, and CVs
- Help planning any required tests or additional materials
- Support with organizing deadlines and application materials
- Opportunities to present research and practice talking about your work
The program is designed so that you can begin a graduate program in the fall immediately after you complete your bachelor鈥檚 degree.
