About the B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration

The Department of Criminal Justice Administration at CSUDH is committed to educating and empowering undergraduate students to become thoughtful, ethical, and engaged leaders in the pursuit of justice. Grounded in a strong commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion, we encourage students to examine the structural, historical, and cultural factors that shape justice systems and their impacts. We foster rigorous critical thinking, analytical reasoning, evidence-based inquiry, and community engagement that connects theory, social science research, and policy to deepen understanding of crime, law, and social control within our diverse and evolving communities.

Scheduling

CSUDH follows a semester system with courses scheduled during fall and spring. Some courses may be offered during summer for optional enrollment. Courses are offered through day, evening, online, and hybrid formats. Students have the flexibility to choose the course, time, and modality that meets their needs.听

Academic Support

Admitted students are provided with a degree plan used to track course completion until graduation. Advisors are available to assist students in-person or online with scheduling and registration via the Student Success Center. The Internship Advisor works directly with employers and public agencies to bring opportunities to students; she meets with students in-person and online regarding internship and job opportunities. Faculty and Department Chairs are available to work with students on discipline-focused improvement, career guidance, and mentorship.

Concentration in Homeland Security Studies

Students in the Criminal Justice Program have the option to select the concentration in Homeland Security Studies. The concentration in Homeland Security Studies prepares students to make significant contributions to the community in the fields of homeland security and criminal justice administration. Completion of the HSS concentration provides students with a conceptual context for understanding homeland security, potential threats and vulnerabilities, and an understanding of preparedness, response, and recovery including countering plausible threat scenarios in the United States.

Program Learning Outcomes

The CJA Program Learning Outcomes are aligned with CSUDH Undergraduate Institutional Learning Outcomes. Upon completion of the B.S. in CJA, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, research, and case law in criminal justice administration (Disciplinary Proficiency).
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking and skeptical inquiry in their analysis of problems and potential solutions related to criminal justice administration (Critical Thinking).
  3. Understand and assess the role of diversity and multicultural perspectives in the policies, practices, and culture of criminal justice administration (Engaged Citizenry).
  4. Present well-organized and well-supported arguments in both written and oral formats (Communication).
  5. Evaluate and practice ethical decision-making in criminal justice administration (Engaged Citizenry.)

  7. Evaluate and analyze the implications of slavery and colonialism on our modern criminal justice system.

Facilities

Courses are primarily taught in the new Innovation & Instruction Building located at the front of the CSUDH campus. The building has numerous open lounge seating areas, closed student study breakout rooms, new classrooms, the CBAPP Investment Lab, the for entrepreneurs and help with business start-up, the Student Success Center which provides student advisement services, and the coffee shop. The campus is equipped with free Wi-Fi for students, and virtual and in-person technical support.
