Dr. Cheever is a Professor and Journalism Program Coordinator in the Department of Communications at CSUDH, where she teaches courses in journalism, media literacy and media psychology. Dr. Cheever鈥檚 research examines the ways in which new media and information technologies impact people鈥檚 psychological health. She has published numerous empirical studies on such topics as wireless mobile device use and anxiety, technology鈥檚 contribution to sleep disorders, online dating, psychiatric disorders associated with modern technologies, multitasking in the digital age, and more. She is the co-editor of聽The Handbook of Psychology, Technology and Society聽(Wiley-Blackwell, 2015), and the co-author of聽iDisorder: Understanding our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming its Hold on Us聽(Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) 补苍诲听Rewired: Understanding the iGeneration and the Way They Learn聽(Palgrave Macmillan, 2010).
She has been a featured guest on the news programs聽60 Minutes,听Good Morning America, 补苍诲听America Inside Out with Katie Couric, the BBC program聽Panorama聽and the documentaries聽Follow This 补苍诲听Addicted to Sexting聽on Netflix. She has participated in NPR鈥檚聽Crawford Family Forum; was featured on the cover of聽The Daily Breeze聽newspaper; and has been a featured expert in聽颁辞蝉尘辞辫辞濒颈迟补苍听惭补驳补锄颈苍别,听Fast Company,听The Union Newspaper, 补苍诲听CBS News. Dr. Cheever was awarded the 2018 Presidential Outstanding Professor Award and the 2018 CSU Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award. Dr. Cheever is a lifetime member of Kappa Tau Alpha, the Journalism and Mass Communications honors society, and is a founding mentor of the George Marsh Applied Cognition Laboratory, an interdisciplinary laboratory she runs with Psychology Professors Dr. L. Mark Carrier and Dr. Larry Rosen. Dr. Cheever worked as a journalist for nearly 20 years, holding positions such as magazine editor, entertainment editor, dining reviewer, features writer, reporter, and designer. She is the former editor of聽Orange Coast Magazine聽and former Lifestyle, Entertainment and Features editor at Times Community News, a division of the聽Los Angeles Times. In addition to her work at CSUDH, she is the president of a non-profit organization that helps homeless youth in Orange County, CA.
