Students

Students who don't have their own vehicles and are involved in community engaged learning courses or community-based research projects, and who are placed with off-campus community organizations outside of the university can consider the following list of transportation options:

Why take a community engaged course?

Community engaged learning courses connect classroom education with community service, foster student leadership through experiential learning, provide practical lessons that can build confidence, critical thinking, and job readiness.

In the words of student Samantha Gutierrez:

鈥淐ommunity engaged learning courses allow students to gain an understanding about community engaged research/ learning within a classroom while being able to incorporate that knowledge into hands on work with CSUDH鈥檚 surrounding community. Although courses may differ, every class has core values that are central to community engagement. Students will be gaining hands on experiences in civic engagement, building ethical and collaborative relationships with community members, challenged to do research in a non-normative academic way, and through reflections they will further understand their positionality within the community space.鈥

Example of a community based course at CSUDH

  • Professor Anat鈥檚 Women Studies (WMS) 395 Gender Justice Organizing course (Spring 2025)
    • Course Syllabus description 鈥淭his course will introduce students to general topics in community organizing, gender studies, justice, and activism, and draw connections between gender, race, sexuality, and grassroots community and organizational activism focused on gender justice. Students will be expected to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to observational and documentation projects focusing on the activism occurring on the college campus and in the larger community鈥

Student鈥檚 definition of what community based participatory research is after finishing WMS 395:

  • 鈥淏y actively engaging with those who are part of the community being studied, CBPR creates genuine relationships between researchers and the community. This approach helps to humanize the research.鈥 -Anonymous student
  • 鈥淐ommunity-based participatory research is a collaborative research based method that not only brings the voice of the people of the study, but authority therefore making them equal partners with the researcher.鈥 -Anonymous student

Starting the fall of 2026, the academic schedule will identify community engaged learning courses to make it easier for students to select those courses and enroll. More information on this coming in the spring of 2026.
