The African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians Collection

This collection, also known as the Sacred Music Collection, is associated with the African Diaspora of Sacred Music and Musicians (ADSMM) Program. ADSMM’s mission is to facilitate research, as well as preserve and make accessible collections documenting the lives of important figures within the sacred music community and its influence, primarily within the Los Angeles Black community. The Sacred Music Collection is made up of smaller collections that contain various primary source materials, such as sheet music, books, periodicals, photographs, audiovisual materials, manuscripts, and more.

  1. Hansonia Caldwell Collection

    Dr. Hansonia Caldwell is emeritus professor of music at ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) with specialization in music, African American music history, piano, choral conducting, and the humanities. She was a faculty member at CSUDH for more than forty years and founded the CSUDH Jubilee Choir and the African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians Program, now known as the CADSMM.   2. Virgina L. White Collection

    Virginia White is one of the original members of the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers. She performed with the singers from their original concerts and tours in 1968 through to the early 2000s. This collection is composed of photographs, posters, programs, tour materials, ephemera, and costumes related to White’s tenure as a member of the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers. The collection also contains several scrapbooks compiled by fellow Jubilee Singers member Jacquelyn Sebastian. The collection is held by the Online Archive of California.

  3. Albert J. McNeil Collection

    The materials in the Albert J. McNeil Collection consist of records, photographs, programs, clippings, press releases, publications, sheet music, and audio and video recordings that document McNeil's work as the director of the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers, including his teaching career, work as choral director for various churches, and his personal life. The collection is held by the Online Archive of California.

  4. Don Lee White Collection

    This collection contains papers, photographs, videos, and musical recordings related to organist, conductor, and musicologist Dr. Don Lee White. The collection documents African American church music, church history, and the evolution of spiritual music in African American churches. It also includes several compilations of hymns along with audio and video recordings of church and classical performances.

  5. Lillie Hill Jones Sacred Music Collection

    The Lillie Hill Jones Sacred Music Collection comprises music—primarily African American sacred music such as gospel and spirituals—in a variety of formats, including sheet music, anthologies, and books. It also contains personal papers detailing Jones's education, choral, and church activities, music education and instructional materials, and music history. The collection is held by the Online Archive of California.

  6. The Shambrey Chorale CollectionÌý

    This collection includes sheet music, performance notes, performance programs, chorale rosters, photos, a book, journal articles, correspondence documents, and multimedia related to the Shambrey Chorale. Choral works include early traditional sacred church music and hymns from the sixteenth century to contemporary styles, as well as compositions from canonical European composers, traditional negro spirituals, gospel, jazz, musical theater, American patriotism, American folk songs, Christmas themes, and ethnomusicological styles.   7. The African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians (ADSMM) Sheet Music Collection

    The African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians (ADSMM) Sheet Music Collection comprises sheet music, choral scores, full and partial scores, manuscript music, music books, and compilations. While the music subsists primarily within sacred music genre, including gospels, spirituals, and classical pieces, it also includes a significant amount of secular music, ranging from jazz to popular music, Broadway musicals, and operas. The collection is held by the Online Archive of California.

  8. Jester Hairston Collection

    The collection includes biographical materials on Jester Hairston, music manuscripts written by him, music collected by him, programs for choral events, and administrative materials concerning the planning and execution of the Hairston’s centennial celebration. Biographical materials include both unpublished book manuscripts and published works. Music includes arrangements written in Hairston’s own hand and published materials that he collected. The centennial celebration administrative materials focus on the planning committee and includes a VHS of the program.
