NAGPRA

CSU Dominguez Hills affirms its deep respect for the sovereignty of Native Nations and our responsibility to steward ancestral remains and cultural items with care, accountability, and transparency. We are fully committed to meeting the requirements of both the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (CalNAGPRA). These laws recognize the inherent rights of Indigenous peoples to their ancestors, funerary objects, sacred items, and objects of cultural patrimony. At CSU Dominguez Hills, we understand that repatriation is not just a legal process鈥攊t is a moral obligation rooted in trust, relationship, and respect.

聽The University has submitted an initial inventory of relevant collections and has begun consultation with Tribal Nations regarding items subject to repatriation. All materials identified under NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA are stored in a secure, climate-controlled facility on campus and overseen by the Office of Tribal Relations. We remain actively engaged in building partnerships with Tribes and are committed to the respectful and timely return of all ancestors and cultural belongings in our care.

聽For Tribal representatives or cultural resource professionals seeking to initiate consultation, please contact Johnny Sampson, NAGPRA Coordinator, at josampson@csudh.edu
