Mission

The Mission

The Student-Engaged Health Research Institute (SEHR Institute) is a multi-disciplinary, applied research center focused on addressing health-related needs, problems, disparities, and inequities experienced within underserved communities. The SEHR Institute centers projects around facilitating student-faculty co-engagement in scholarship, research, and creative projects. Students and faculty in the SEHR collaborate with governmental, community-based, and university/research institutions such as the City of Los Angeles, AIDS Project Los Angeles Health, Charles R. Drew University/Spectrum, and RAND corporation.

The goal of the SEHR Institute is to bolster faculty-student engaged research on health-related projects, thus improving student learning on key learning outcomes such as oral and written communication, research, critical thinking, information literacy, equity and inclusion, and integrated learning/life-long learning.

The SEHR engages students in hands-on research primarily through coursework and extra-curricular participation in student research conferences. Engaging students in a laboratory space via weekly meetings and lab hours for research within a physical space helps to form strong ties between faculty and students, facilitating academic growth and professional development through ongoing conversations and projects.
