Parent & Family Orientation

Welcome to the Toro Family

Parent & Family Orientation (PFO) empowers families with the knowledge, tools, and connections needed to support their student鈥檚 academic and personal success at CSUDH. Through this program, families of first-time, first-year students gain insight into university operations, resources, and expectations while fostering a sense of belonging within the Toro community.

Important Information:听

  • PFO is an听optional program designed specifically for parents, guardians, and family members.
  • PFO is separate from your student鈥檚听required听New Student Orientation (NSO) and is held on a different date than your student鈥檚 scheduled NSO.听
  • Students must attend their scheduled NSO.听

  • Please review the Key Components of PFO before registering so you know what information will be covered during the orientation.

2026 Parent & Family Orientation Date:

We will also offer two virtual sessions at the end of July (one in English and one in Spanish). These sessions will highlight key campus resources and services available to students. First-time, first-year students and their families are encouraged to attend together.

Parent & Family Orientation Registration

To register, you'll need:

  • Your student鈥檚 CSUDH ID number.
  • A debit or credit card to cover the non-refundable $30 payment听

Key components of PFO include:

Understand University Basics: Learn how the university operates and where to find key offices/departments.听

Comprehend Academic Advising and Expectations:听Learn how academic advising works, including the role of advisors, general registration processes, and how students can stay on track to meet their academic goals.听

Identify Academic and Student Support Resources:听Be able to identify and navigate essential resources, such as tutoring centers, mental health services, and accessibility services, to support their student鈥檚 well-being.听

Understand Faculty Expectations: Learn what faculty expect from students in terms of classroom participation, academic integrity, and time management to help guide their student鈥檚 college journey.听

Encourage Financial Responsibility: Gain strategies for supporting your student in building healthy financial habits, setting realistic expectations around expenses, and navigating their growing financial independence during college.

Support Student Success: Develop strategies for supporting their student鈥檚 transition to college life, fostering independence while remaining a source of encouragement and guidance.听

Build Community with Fellow Families: Connect with other parents and families, creating a supportive network within the Toro community to share experiences, advice, and encouragement.听
