BIO

Dr. Hwang became an occupational therapist in 1994. Over the decades, he has worked in a wide range of settings including pediatrics, mental health, neurological rehab, education, and community health. Recently, his clinical practice has focused on community settings serving clients with psychiatric disorders and older adults with chronic conditions and dementia. Dr. Hwang joined the Occupational Therapy Department at CSUDH in 2005. His teaching expertise includes theories in Occupational Therapy, clinical and occupation-based assessments across the lifespan, quantitative research methodology, and occupational therapy capstone project development and implementation. As the inaugural program coordinator of the newly developed entry-level Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) Program, Dr. Hwang has been instrumental in the process of OTD curricular design, development and polishing. Taking on his current role as Doctoral Capstone Coordinator (DCC) for the OTD Program, Dr. Hwang continues to develop the capstone curriculum and courses, help guide students’ capstone planning and preparation and coordinate the ACOTE-compliant doctoral capstone experience (DCE).ÌýÌý

SCHOLARSHIP AGENDA

Dr. Hwang’s scholarship agenda spans discovery, application and teaching. His clinical research sheds light on the occupation-based concerns and health issues experienced by diverse client populations such as individuals with diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer, or spinal cord injury, teenage mothers, and veterans with PTSD. Dr. Hwang’s recent practice in mental health leads to his ongoing international research collaboration with a state-of-the-art psychiatric center in Taiwan that has been devoted to exploring the outcomes of occupational therapy services for people with psychiatric disorders. Several research articles that resonated with the profession’s Centennial Vision on mental health practice were published in major occupational therapy journals. Moreover, Dr. Hwang and Dr. Terry Peralta developed and validated a set of lifestyle evaluation and intervention tools for older adults: Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile (HELP), Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile (HELP) - Screening Form (HELP-Screener), and Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile (HELP) & HELP-Screener: Guide for Clinicians. Consequently, several community-based HELP programs were funded to deliver services and resources for community-dwelling older adults with and without chronic conditions. Over the years, these tools were found to enable clinicians who work with older clients in community settings to screen and monitor the clients' health-promoting occupations and lifestyle behaviors, implement client-centered and occupation-based interventions and develop cost-effective community-based HELP programs. Noteworthily, scholars, researchers and clinicians in many countries have translated and culturally adapted the HELP tools into various language/cultural versions such as HELP-Spanish, HELP-Korean, HELP-Taiwanese, HELP-Thai, HELP-Turkish, and HELP-Japanese. A series of psychometric and clinical studies on these HELP tools can be found in major occupational therapy journals.
