Are the information sessions in person?听 | The information sessions are held virtually and hosted by an instructor from the program. Participants are encouraged to turn on their cameras and be visible in ZOOM.听听 |
I have several questions, may I set up a time to meet with a representative from the program?听听 | Given the number of students interested in the program, the program cannot accommodate individual meeting requests.听 However, an advisor/instructor from the MFT department will host the Information Sessions and will respond to individual questions.听 听 |

Program Format听 | |
Can I attend your program online or in a hybrid format?听听听 | Our program is a residential, or in person, full-time cohort model, 3-year program with evening classes starting at 4:00pm and 6:45pm Monday through Thursday (with a couple of exceptions).听 |
Does the program allow students to attend part-time?听 | The MFT program is designed for students to complete course work in 3 years on a full-time basis with a cohort of their peers. Due to a variety of circumstances, students may need to adjust their program plan. Any shifts to the program plan require approval from the department chair and collaboration from the student鈥檚 assigned advisor.听 |

Can I waive the GRE?听 | Prospective students:听听 听 who have completed a master鈥檚 degree听听 OR听听 who earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher are excused from the GRE requirement.听听 |

What are the prerequisite courses?听 | PSY235 Introduction to Research Methods听 PSY 360 Theories of Personality听 PSY 363 Abnormal Psychology听 The prerequisites must have been completed within the last five years.听 |
I have taken a few of the listed prerequisite courses. Should I take the other courses at a local community college?听 听 OR听 听 My major in college was _____ . I did not take any psychology courses. Can I still apply?听 听 How can I determine whether the class I am currently enrolled in is equivalent to the course offered at CSUDH? Is it possible for the program to review my transcripts at this time to confirm whether the class I completed meets the requirement?听 | 听 Students who are admitted and need to complete specific prerequisites (Intro to Research Methods, Theories of Personality, and Abnormal Psychology) will take MFT 400 the summer prior to starting classes.听 听 听 听 MFT 400 is CSUDH MFT program鈥檚 equivalent course that combines the three required prerequisites: Intro to Research Methods, Theories of Personality, and Abnormal Psychology. MFT 400 is offered by the MFT program. The course is taught online and must be completed before commencing classes in the fall.听 The MFT program cannot review transcripts to determine whether CSUDH will accept a class as an equivalent course. Applicants are encouraged to contact the CSUDH Registrar鈥檚 Office or the Office of Admissions to confirm which classes may be accepted as equivalent.听 Some applicants use the website to gain a general understanding of course equivalencies. Please note that the program is not affiliated with ASSIST.org and cannot offer guidance or instructions on how to use the website.听 听 |

If I meet all requirements, what are my next steps?听 | The application process has 2 parts:听 The basic CAL APPLY application for all prospective master鈥檚 students applying to a Cal State University school and听 items designed specifically for the CSUDH MFT program. Some items include:听听
Applicant will choose a book from the offered list and write a reflective response听听 (You will need to obtain access to the book(s) on your own. Consider websites such as Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/) and Thrift Books (). Your local library may also be an option.听

What is the CSUDH GPA minimum?听 | CSUDH鈥檚 GPA minimum is 2.5. The MFT admissions committee will review all completed applications with the university鈥檚 minimum GPA.听听 听 |
What are the program鈥檚 preferred GRE scores?听 | Preferred GRE scores: 140 鈥 Quantitative Reasoning, 146 鈥 Verbal Reasoning, 4 鈥 Analytical Writing.听 听 |
Can the program provide a coupon or fee waiver for the application?听 | While navigating through the CAL APPLY application steps, you will be prompted to explore options related to eligibility for fee waivers. The MFT department does not offer coupons or fee waivers.听听 |
Can you please provide a sample of what information should be included in a letter of reference?听 | The program does not offer sample letters of recommendation or guidelines for writing a letter of recommendation.听 |
Is it possible to apply for Fall 2025, but start in the spring semester of 2026?听 | CSUDH MFT program does not have a spring cohort/spring start. Students who apply by February 1st of each year and are accepted will begin classes in August of the same year.听听 |

Steps after submitting application听 | |
What is the timeframe for the interview portion of the application process?听 | CSUDH MFT program鈥檚 admission interviews are conducted in person in March. The exact date is TBD.听听听 |
What if I miss the interview?听 | Attending the in-person interview is essential to your admission process. Kindly make the necessary arrangements to attend. Historically, faculty, past alumni, and current students attend the all-day interview process.听 |
When will I be notified of acceptance?听 | CSUDH鈥檚 admission department communicates with students regarding the status of acceptance. The MFT department does not communicate with students regarding acceptance status. In the event you are not accepted to the program during your initial application cycle, the program encourages you to review your application, make changes if appropriate and reapply.听听 |
I was accepted and I need to enroll in MFT 400. Where can I sign up?听 | After you complete the CSUDH required 鈥渘ewly admitted鈥 steps, the MFT department will be notified of your student status. In the late spring, the MFT department will reach out and assist new students with signing up for MFT 400. There is space in the online course for all newly admitted students. Spaces will not 鈥渇ill up.鈥澨 |
