CSUDH Student Research Conference (SRC)

ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú, Dominguez Hills recognizes student research as a fundamental part of student learning. CSUDH continually explores new ways to provide research opportunities to students and faculty to expand their research knowledge and provide resources for their research and presentation. The annual CSUDH Student Research Conference showcases undergraduate and graduate scholarship, promoting excellence in research by recognizing outstanding student accomplishments across the disciplines.

American Public Health Association (APHA)  Conference

CSU Health Policy Conference

Introduction
Each of the past several years a student public health policy / legislative conference has been held at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. The purpose of the conference is to provide students with a direct opportunity to observe the California state legislature and its activities relative to health policy legislation. The conference will be held again during the Spring Semester, the dates of which are usuall ymid-April. It is anticipated that 10 students and two alternates will be involved. The conference and travel expenses are funded by the CSUDH Department of Health Sciences.

Typical Topical Agenda
1. Observe and develop a good understanding of how the California State Legislature advances healthcare policy initiatives - from proposal and committee review to floor debate and final enactment.
2. Analyze the population-level impact of legislative enactments in California, including both benefits and fiscal or social costs.
3. Participate in meetings with selected legislative officials and public health department representatives to gain insight into their perspectives on governmental oversight and regulation of health services.
4. Attend and directly observe state government proceedings, including legislative committee hearings and related operations.
5. Engage with CSU students and faculty from other campuses to exchange ideas and broaden professional networks.
6. Prepare a structured trip report and deliver a presentation to peers upon return, synthesizing key lessons, policy insights, and professional reflections.

CSUDH students will travel to Sacramento as a group on the afternoon of Monday, April 13, 2026, departing from either Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) or Long Beach Airport (LGB), with the final departure airport to be confirmed. The group is tentatively scheduled to stay at the Hyatt in Sacramento, with students assigned two per room. The itinerary includes two full days of structured activities on Tuesday and Wednesday. The group will return to Southern California on an early evening flight on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

Student Activities
1. Students will directly observe the workings of California state government operations.
2. Students will attend sessions to hear commentary by selected state legislators and health department representatives
3. Students will network with other CSU health sciences student and faculty attendees during formal and informal activities
4. Students will tour various governmental attractions in the Sacramento state capitol area

Participant Selection
• Students seeking to participate in the Public Health Policy/Legislative Field Trip must complete and submit the application provided below
• All student applications, including written statements, will be reviewed by a designated selection committee.
• Participants will be selected based on established criteria aligned with the objectives of the public health/legislative conference.
• Selected students will be formally notified and provided with detailed logistical information regarding travel, lodging, expectations, and the program itinerary.
• CSUDH participants will be led and supervised by faculty from the School of Public Health and Health Sciences throughout the duration of the trip.
