Chadwick Duncan Spring 2026 Graduate CSUDH's Role in My Journey

About Me: I will be studying for my Master's in Public Health with an emphasis on Urban Health Disparities starting this fall 2026 semester at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Charles R Drew University (CDU) is located here in Los Angeles, California, up the street from my alma mater of Cal State Dominguez Hills. CDU is a designated Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) and recognized as a Historically Black Graduate Institution (HBGI). Its Medical Education program is one of only four Historically Black medical colleges in the nation. The CDU MPH program in Urban Health Disparities exposes us students to public health within a health disparities framework and joins this historic institution that has both geographically and demographically linked itself to underserved communities of color. I have been fortunate enough to have already been working full-time as a Healthcare Analyst for a major health insurance company upon my enrollment at Dominguez Hills. I knew I wanted to transition from the Private sector to the Public sector and felt Public Health would be a great next avenue that can already complement my existing experience. Upon completion of my MPH, I would like to apply to the California State or Federal department as a Public Health Officer, Public Health Analyst, or Health Policy Analyst. These roles allow me to influence health policy, financial resources for healthcare, and the overall implementation of healthcare at a macro level.聽

I have had a storied journey to graduate from Cal State Dominguez Hills and now to be an MPH student at CDU. I鈥檝e attended multiple colleges and universities, such as UC Riverside, Chaffey College, and Long Beach City College, before graduating from Dominguez Hills. I went to school full time while working full time to ensure I was able to keep up with my financial responsibilities as well as my scholastic.

While at Dominguez Hills, I still wanted to leave an impact on the community. I joined the Public Health Toro Association (PHTA), Male Success Alliance (MSA), and most importantly, the Zeta Mu chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated (OPP). I served as the Chapter President (Basileus) for the Zeta Mu chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc while being the Activity Coordinator for the PHTA. It was a lot to juggle: school, work, and my campus leadership roles, but my family and friends helped immensely.

Advice for Students

My biggest advice would be to get involved on campus! I understand CSUDH is very much a commuter school; I was a commuter student myself. However, joining organizations made it a lot easier to meet new people, especially since I was a transfer student. These connections allow you to do events and services that build up your resume or personal skills. You meet people who can help you in your studies or keep you accountable! College and university are hard; trust me, I know, but having constructive involvement on the campus allows you to make connections and meet resources you may have never made. Of course, you have to have good time management to not allow getting involved to be a detriment to your grades, but the benefits are there for the taking.

Final Thoughts

You鈥檙e your own best friend but your own worst enemy. Be the friend you need more times than the enemy. Set yourself up for success. Set multiple alarms for assignments and events. Create a calendar (physical or on your phone) and set up time for work (if you have a job), when to study, and when to have fun! You can have everything, but you can鈥檛 have it all at once!
