This course examines the geoscience, recreational opportunities, and environmental conservation issues associated with great waterfalls around the world. It is an introduction to the hydrological science of waterfalls, and a geographical and visual orientation to some of the world鈥檚 most compelling natural features. In surveying them, we will broadly consider what makes a waterfall 鈥済reat.鈥 We will contrast historical notions of cascading streams with modern attempts to assess their value鈥攔ecreational, spiritual, psychological, and environmental鈥攙ersus competing utilitarian purposes.
