Clinical Practice

As required by , students must complete 600 hours of supervised teaching practice.

Students must have met the subject matter requirement prior to starting student teaching (TED 435 or TED 455). If you need support with meeting the subject matter requirement, please contact Rebecca Ellis, rellis22@csudh.edu.

The Teacher Education Program has outlined the clinical practice expectations and requirements in the Student Teaching Handbook.

Credential Pathways

There are two pathways to complete our teacher preparation program, student teaching and university intern.

  • University supervisor assigned for support during student teaching semester (6 observations)

      Clinical Practice FAQs

    What do I need to do to be cleared by districts for student teaching?

    Some districts require volunteer applications (e.g., LAUSD) and interviews (e.g., Garden Grove USD) to receive clearance for student teaching.聽聽

    Many districts also are requiring fingerprint clearance at the candidate鈥檚 expense (fees range from $45 - $75).

    All districts are require a negative TB test within the last 60 days for student teaching clearance.

    How do I apply for my substitute teaching permit?

    You will apply directly to the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing for your Once you have your permit, you can apply to school districts to become a substitute teacher.

    Student teachers with a valid 30-Day Emergency Teaching Permit or a valid Temporary County Certificate (TCC) processed by the employing district may only substitute teach within their mentor teacher鈥檚 classroom for a maximum of 10 days.

    Where can I complete my student teaching?

    The major districts we partner with to place student teachers are: ABC, Bellflower, Compton, Downey, Garden Grove, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Norwalk-La Mirada, Paramount, Redondo Beach, Torrance, and others.

    What are the Equitable Standards for Clinical Practice?

    All enrolled students will be asked to electronically sign acknowledgement of this College of Education (COE) Equitable Standards for Clinical Practice upon application to a program. The COE defines equitable conduct as a student鈥檚 ability to consistently demonstrate behaviors aligned with the COE Vision and Mission, and the College is committed to guiding students in upholding the following humanizing practices and ideologies in classes and clinical/field settings.

    How do I request for my preliminary credential?

    After completion of the student teaching program, candidates may request that the CSUDH College of Education recommend them for the preliminary teaching credential聽 with the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).聽 You can make this request by completing a credential request where you will submit official transcripts and documentation of passing all required performance assessments (e.g., CalTPA, RICA). After the recommendation is complete, the CTC will contact you and request that you complete the CTC Professional Fitness Questions (PFQ) for final approval.

    What happens after I complete student teaching and the program? What is the Induction Program?

    Once hired by a district, candidates must complete an induction program which includes professional development, mentoring, assistance in planning and evaluation.聽 If your district does not have an induction program, you can complete one through the CSUDH College of Education Induction Program or through another local education agency (e.g., ).
