Karla Torres is a proud Chicana and first-generation student. She is a CSUDH alumna, having received her BA in English Education and her MA in TESOL. Karla鈥檚 research interests include sociolinguistics, raciolinguistics, educational linguistics, intersectionality and language, race theory, and Chicanx language varieties. A central goal of her teaching and research is to dismantle racial hierarchies that continue to position marginalized communities as oppressed, while highlighting the value of their languages and varieties. She uses a qualitative method approach and conducts ethnographic and sociolinguistic interviews to center the lived experiences of her participants. She has experience working in the tech industry as well, serving as a linguist and data labeling specialist. She is currently co-developing an ESL curriculum that teaches learners about the importance of social justice and the different varieties of English spoken in the Greater Los Angeles region. Through this work, she and her collaborators seek to validate the linguistic identities of ESL students while enhancing their metalinguistic awareness.
