Low Speed Vehicle Safety

好色先生, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) spreads over 350 acres. Many employees, including custodial and trades staff, must travel and carry tools and equipment to numerous campus locations throughout the day. To best serve the university, CSUDH utilizes Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) for many support staff positions. These vehicles are also known as club cars, golf carts, powered carts, or utility trucks.听

Program Requirements

To qualify to drive a low speed vehicle on campus, employees must first:

Obtain Department Approval

The privilege to drive a low speed vehicle is not offered to every employee. Your department must demonstrate their need for you to drive for campus business.听

Enroll in the Defensive Driver Program

Enrollment information and forms can be found on Risk Management's Defensive Driver Training Page.听

Employees must:

1. Enroll in the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Employer Pull Notice (EPN) program. This means that your driver's license is on file with the university. If your driver's license is revoked or suspended, you may not participate in the program. Moving violations or DUIs may also result in ineligibility.听

2. Once the EPN is in place, Risk Management will assign two CSU Learn online courses: Defensive Driver Training and Powered Cart Safety Training. An automated email is sent informing you of the assignment.

3. Once you have passed these courses, you must email your completion certificates to Risk Management at: riskmanagement@csudh.edu and request the behind the wheel training and test. This portion is your responsibility. It is not an automated process.听

Pass the Behind-the Wheel Test

Once Risk Management receives your email, they will verify your course completion and respond to you with further instructions. Environmental Health and Safety will reach out and coordinate with you to schedule your test. If you haven't driven a golf cart before, you may request some time to practice with the trainer. This is optional; a review is provided at the time of the test.

Maintaining Driving Privileges

Driving a cart on campus is a privilege. Employees who fail to follow safety requirements are subject to disciplinary action and possible removal from the program. It is important to note that if the University Police Department issues you a ticket for a moving violation while driving a cart, it is your own responsibility and may affect your driving record. The university will not cover the expense of the ticket.听

Training Materials

A comprehensive Fleet Safety Policy is currently being developed by Risk Management. In the meantime, Environmental Health and Safety has put together some information that will help you understand program requirements.
